I use an AeroPress with the James Hoffmann method. My setup includes a Timemore Chestnut C3S Pro grinder and seasonal, freshly roasted beans from Rave coffee.

Here is the method to make one cup.

My Equipment List

Coffee grinder (I use a Timemore Chestnut C3S Pro)

Standard AeroPress

Digital kitchen scale (bonus points if it has an integrated timer)

Coffee (duh!)

Kettle with fresh water

Paper AeroPress filter

Mug

Step 1: Grind the Coffee

Set your Timemore C3S Pro to 12 clicks from zero. Turn the dial clockwise until it stops. Count 12 clicks anti-clockwise from that point.

Weigh 11g of coffee beans. Pour the beans into the grinder. Grind the coffee into the bottom catch cup.

Step 2: Prepare the Filter and Press

Place one paper filter into the plastic cap. Screw the cap onto the AeroPress chamber.

Put the AeroPress on top of your mug. Pour extra hot water through the chamber to rinse the paper. Dump the rinse water out of the mug.

Place the mug and AeroPress on your digital scale. Add the 11g of ground coffee into the chamber. Tare the scale to zero.

Step 3: Pour the Water

Fill your kettle with 400g of fresh water. Bring the water to a rolling boil.

Pour 200g of boiling water directly into the coffee grounds. Pour quickly in one continuous stream. You want to reach 200g on your scale within 8 seconds. Do not stop to let the coffee bloom.

Step 4: Create the Vacuum

Grab the plunger immediately after pouring. Insert the rubber bung into the top of the chamber. Angle it slightly, then straighten it out. Push down just 1 cm.

Pull up a fraction of a millimetre. This action creates a strong vacuum. The liquid stops dripping into the mug. Start the timer and leave alone for 2 minutes.

Step 5: Swirl and Press

Wait until your timer reaches 2 minutes. Pick up the AeroPress and mug together. Give them one gentle swirl.

Set the mug back on the counter (you don’t want to press down on the scale). Wait 30 seconds for the grounds to settle to the bottom.

Press the plunger down gently. It should take around 30 seconds. Stop pressing when you hear a soft hiss of air. Remove the AeroPress, clean the grounds, and enjoy your coffee.
